What Is Texas Hold 'Em Poker?Texas Hold'em Poker is a "community card" poker game and one of the fastest moving games in a poker room.
The game is labeled "community card" because the players each receive two cards face down and then use five "community" cards which the dealer places face up in the center of the table. The community cards are used by the players together with their two "pocket" (face down) cards to make up the strongest possible five-card hand. Two to ten people can play Texas Hold'em Poker, and the game is fast, despite the large number of players, because there is no need to exchange cards . Texas Hold'em is especially popular in poker tournaments. How to Play Texas Hold 'Em PokerA Texas Hold 'Em poker game is played with a standard 52-card deck. There are no jokers and no wild cards.There are three ways in which to play Texas Hold'em: Limit Hold'em - A limit is placed on the amount of money allowed for betting. The minimum and maximum amounts are determined by the "house". Pot-Limit Hold'em - The maximum betting amount or raise can only be as much as the amount in the pot. No-Limit Hold'em - Players may bet or raise any amount up to all of the chips a player has on the table. This is the form usually played in poker tournaments.
There are four rounds of betting in Texas Hold'em. After the Blind Bets are posted, two "pocket" cards are dealt to each player. This is the first betting round, usually called the "pre-Flop" round. A player may Call, Raise, or Fold. In the second round, three community cards are dealt face up in the center of the table. This is called the Flop round. The players can then Check, Raise or Fold. In the third round another community card is dealt called the Turn. Again the players may Check, Raise or Fold. In the fourth round, a fifth and final community card is dealt called the River, followed by the final round of betting. This leads to the "Showdown". If only one player remains, he is not required to show his hand, so there is no Showdown. If two or more players remain, they use their two pocket cards and the five community cards to create the strongest five-card hand possible. The winner takes the pot. If two or more players have the same hand, the pot is split equally among them. Many casinos include promotional Bonus Hands in the game of Texas Hold'em Poker. The house determines a minimum number of players who must receive cards at the start of bonus hand game. The player that wins the pot in the Bonus Hand receives the winner prize amount. All other players receive smaller prize amounts.
How to Win at Texas Hold'em PokerThere are two ways to win at Texas Hold'em Poker. First, if everyone else has folded, and you are the only player remaining, you win the pot. Second, if more than one player remains at the end of the betting rounds, you have a showdown. In that case, the player with the best poker hand wins, pursuant to the standard poker hand rankings.Texas Hold'em Poker strategy is based on trying to minimize your losses, by folding early when you have a weak hand, and maximize your winnings, by building a big pot when you have a strong hand. Texas Hold'em Poker TermsBet Limits - The minimum and maximum number of chips that players can bet, determined by the House.Dealer Button - A flat disk marked with a "D" used to signify the dealer's position at the table. Small Blind - The first bet placed by the player to the dealer's left equal to half of the minimum bet limit. This is a forced bet. Big Blind - The first bet posted by the player to the left of the Small Blind player. Like the Small Blind, it is a forced bet and is equal to the minimum bet limit. Call - A player calls another player's bet by placing a number of chips in the pot equal to the other player's bet. Raise - A player increases the amount of a bet made by another player. Fold - When a player throws in his cards thus giving up any claim to the pot. Pocket Cards - The cards dealt face down to the players. Community Cards - Cards dealt to the table which can be used by all the players to complete a five-card hand. Flop - The first three community cards dealt face up. Turn - The fourth community card dealt face up. River - The fifth community card dealt face up. Showdown - Comparison of players' hands to determine the winner after the last betting round. Pot - The chips that accumulate at the center of the table as each player bets. It goes to the winner of the hand. Bonus Hand Promotion - A specific poker hand number that carries a bonus prize. Bad Beat Hand Promotion - When a player holds a hand with Four-of-a-Kind of 8's or better and is beaten by a higher ranking hand. Bad Beat Jackpot - The prize given to the player with a Bat Beat Hand.
