The History of Casino Games - Sic-Bo

The History of Sic-Bo

Sic Bo is a game of Oriental origin. It has been played in casinos in Macau for years and is thought to be the flagship game of the Chinese casinos. There are no specific details telling when Sic Bo was first played but there are stories of Chinese men in their villages throwing dice up in a covered dish and then betting on the outcome.

Taking the lid off the dish would reveal how the dice had come to rest and the results. There is a legend that this game used to be played with numbered bricks. On the breaks of the Chinese builders and merchants they would number bricks and throw them in the air and bet on where and how they came to land. The bricks were soon replaced by dice as they became too heavy and awkward to play with. (Not to mention that I am sure there were breakages from bricks flying everywhere).

The name Sic Bo has Chinese origins and actually means two dice despite the fact that the game is played with three dice. The bet or bets are placed on the outcome of numbers on the dice when they are thrown. Sic Bi is also known as Tai Sai, Dai Siu, Big and Small or Hi-lo, these games are all associated with the number of dice played and the possible outcomes of the game. Players bet on the possible outcomes of the dice when thrown. Nowadays at land based casinos the dice are thrown in a mechanically controlled container that jigs the dice around for a couple of minutes and then when it comes to stop, the numbers on the face of the dice are the so called winning numbers. These numbers are then lit up on a Roulette type grid where the bets have been placed. A player is able to bet in seven different ways. He can bet on any one of the dice numbers, a combination of two dice, the numerical total of all three dice, a small or big bet, i.e. the total of the dice being up to a certain number or over a certain number, a bet on a specific combination of three dice, a bet on any triplet of dice and a bet on any pair of dice showing. Players are able to bet any of these options or all of the options, the odds for each type of combination are posted at the casino.

Sic bo has always been the second runner to Craps and other dice games. It only made its way over to America in the early 20th Century despite the fact that it had been played for years in the Orient. The Chinese immigrants to the U.S. who came looking for work on the railroads and in construction brought Sic Bo with them. At first it was not a widely accepted and played game as many thought it too similar to Craps and also there was not set way on how to win anything when playing, making it much more difficult. As time went by and the potential players learnt more about the game, they realized how much fun it could be and the potentially high payouts. Naturally casinos were very wary of cheating and imposed strict rules with the games. A player was definitely not allowed to play with his own dice for fear of loaded dice and he was not allowed to handle the dice with two hands. This was a precaution to stop dice swapping in the middle of the game. Still today there are many stewards that surround the Sic Bo table at a land based casino, watching and guarding the game against cheats.

How to Win At Sic Bo

With the increase in technology that became available at casinos, Sic Bo also grew in popularity. The grid like table which the bets are placed on became not just a mat with numbers. It was electric and linked to a computer. When the winning dice came to settle a steward would immediately tap in the winning numbers and these would light up on the board. This glitzy board with flashing lights improved the popularity of the game and more people became aware of Sic Bo. It was still not considered to be one of the most popular games played at casinos because of its total reliance on chance. There are very few books written on how to win at Sic Bo.

Despite this slightly negative image, Sic Bo survived all of the casino criticisms and is still today one of the popular fun and rewarding games that can be played at casinos.

For many years it was not legalized in the United Kingdom, there is no real reason as to why. But in 2002 there was a breakthrough and Sic Bo became one of the legalized games in the UK. Prior to that with the advent of the internet and online casinos, Sic Bo was a natural contender for the online casinos. It is a game that can be played quickly and with very little effort, this is something that is always wanted by online casino players. The principles of the Sic Bo online are the same as regular Sic Bo but with one added advantage, the betting board is much clearer and easier to see. The dice are rolled and controlled by a random number generator which randomly selects where the dice will come to land, so there is no worry of cheating when playing Sic Bo online.

From its early Chinese origins as a game for the laborers until its modern adaptation for the computer screens, Sic Bo has remained a fun game to play. It is not a game where you can definitely say you will win but it is a game of fun while still giving you a chance at winning large sums of money. There is a definite mystique surrounding the game thanks to its Chinese origins and one can feel a bit of culture as one plays. It is always nice to know that you are playing something that has a history rather than a game that has been invented by and for the modern computer.
