Rules of How to Play Atlantic City Blackjack

The first thing the player must do when playing Atlantic City Blackjack is to place his bet. The dealer will then deal two cards to the player, both face up. The dealer will also deal two cards to himself, one face up and one face down. The player goes first, and plays his hand by hitting, standing, doubling down, splitting, surrendering, or taking insurance. After the player finishes, the dealer plays his own hand by hitting or standing.

Atlantic City Blackjack is played with eight standard decks of regular playing cards which are shuffled after each game.

There are a number of important blackjack rules to follow such as if the dealer's hand is bust (i.e. it is more than 21) then the player automatically wins. If the player has a "Blackjack" - an Ace and a card that has a value of 10 - then the player automatically wins.

Additional Atlantic City Blackjack Rules:

  • If the dealer and the player have the same hand, this is know as a "push" and the amount that was bet is redeemed by the player, but no more than that. This also applies if both the player and the dealer get Blackjack.

  • If the player receives two cards of the same number or value then he has the opportunity to split. This means that a second bet is placed which is a second hand to play. This rule applies if you have a Jack and a Ten, for example, or a King and a Ten. Be aware that it is not possible to get Blackjack when cards have been split; in other words, if cards are split which have a value of ten and then an Ace is drawn, this cannot be considered a 'Blackjack', only a '21'. A player is allowed to split his cards up to three times in a game, apart from Aces, which can only be split once. Remember that with every split taken the player is placing another bet with the same value of the initial bet.

  • There is also the opportunity to win more money with the Double Down. This allows the player to double his bet, draw one more card, and then stand. Doubling down gives the player a chance to win twice as much money when he has a good hand, but be careful, it is also a chance to lose twice as much money.

  • The final important rule to remember is insurance. A player can "take insurance" when the first card drawn by the dealer is an Ace. The insurance is taken in case the dealer gets Blackjack. Insurance costs half of the original bet. If the dealer does not have Blackjack, then the player will lose the insurance bet and proceed to play his hand as per usual. If the dealer does have Blackjack, then the insurance is paid out at odds of 2:1.

How to Win at Atlantic City Blackjack

There are a number of ways to win when playing Atlantic City Blackjack. If the first card dealt to the dealer is a 10 or an Ace then the dealer is allowed to check for Blackjack as long as the player has had a chance to buy insurance. Insurance can be taken only if the first card of the dealer is an Ace. The player does not have to take insurance but if he does and the dealer has Blackjack then the insurance bet is paid out at odds of 2:1. If the dealer does not have Blackjack and insurance was taken, then the cost of the insurance is taken from the player's credits and the game continues. If the dealer has Blackjack then the game is automatically over and the next game can begin.

If there is no Ace or 10 to start with then the game can commence with "Hits". The idea is that the player wants to get as close as possible to 21 without going over it (Bust). The player will ask for the cards to be dealt to him in progression until he is satisfied with his hand and then he will call a halt to it, which means he will "stand" on the cards he has. The dealer will then play his own hand and hit until he reaches at least 17. The dealer must stand when his hand reaches 17, even if is a "soft 17". Sometimes the player will be bust - i.e. will go over 21 - in which case the game is over and the player has lost his bet. Sometimes the player and the dealer will end up with the same number which is known as "push", in which case the player will not lose anything but he will also not win anything. The other alternative is that the dealer will be "bust," in which case the player will win the game.

It is important to remember that Aces can be used either as 1 or 11. The face cards, King, Queen and Jack all have a value of 10. When playing Atlantic City Blackjack, the player is not allowed to draw more than 11 cards. If the player has 11 cards and still has not reached 21 or bust then he automatically has to "stand" and the dealer then has his turn.

If the player thinks that he will win a hand after he has received his first two cards then he has the opportunity to place a double down bet. This is a bet in which the player is dealt only one more card and then stands.

A player also has the opportunity to win more money if he decides to split his hand. This can be done if the initial hand has two cards of the same value. Unlike 10-value cards, such as a jack and a king, can be split. Each time a split is made the value of the initial bet placed is taken, it is like placing the bet again.

Definitions and Terms for Atlantic City Blackjack

There are many terms that are used in Atlantic City Blackjack which are defined below:

  • 21 is the maximum value that cards can reach without them being bust. It can be reached without Blackjack by numbered cards; for example, a ten, a four, and a seven.

  • Advanced Blackjack Strategy Table is a system that can be used when the online blackjack auto-play is on; it is designed to benefit the player and help him to define his own game strategy.

  • Blackjack as mentioned previously is an Ace with another card that has a value of ten - it could be a ten of hearts or a face card like a Jack or Queen or King.

  • Bust is called when the cards dealt to either the dealer or the player exceeds the numerical value 21.

  • Denomination is the actual name of the card - for example; a king has a denomination of king, and a value of 10.

  • Double Down is a bet that can be placed if the player thinks that with only one more card drawn he will be able to beat the dealer. After the Double Down bet is taken the player is allowed one more card only, and then has to stand.

  • Hit is the term used for dealing the next card by the player if the player chooses to continue with his game as he believes he can get closer to 21.

  • Hole Card is the card that the dealer is dealt at the beginning of a game, which is face down and only turned after the player has made his moves.

  • Insurance, as described above, is the opportunity for the player to cover himself if the dealer's first card is an Ace and the player believes that the dealer has a high chance of getting Blackjack.

  • Push is when the dealer and the player draw the same result in the blackjack game.

  • Split is the chance to split your bets by adding another bet if the player receives two cards of the same value. Apart from Aces, a player can choose to split up to three times in each game. Aces can only be split once.

  • Stand is the position taken when the player is happy with his hand and does not want to draw any more cards.

  • If a player does not want to carry on playing his hand he can surrender and will only lose half of his original bet.

  • The numerical value of the card is known as the "value", this can be a 1 or 11 for an Ace, for the face cards it is 10. All other cards' value is according to their written numbers.
